Wholesale Markets

Melbourne Market offers new horizons

Melbourne Market has a new site and offers a market for the buying and selling of potted plants as well as its

traditional trade in wholesale fruit, vegetables and cut flowers. Last year, Melbourne Market relocated to new

state-of-the-buildings at Epping. Rachael Blake took a tour of the new facilities for

Greenworld

magazine.

A

visit to the new Melbourne Market means

an early start but all that’s forgotten when

you arrive at the bustling site. I was at

the market on a cold Thursday morning at 7am

to join a tour with Commercial and Business

Development Manager Matthew Elliott.

The Melbourne Market Authority offers tours for

buyers and potential sellers as well as for interested

groups and the media. A tour not only orients

visitors to the site but also explains the day-to-day

operations with more than 3000 people on-site.

We headed into the Flower Markets and here as

Matthew explained that Victoria produces around

40 per cent of the national cut flower market. An

incredible figure well supported by the array of

colours and varieties of fresh cut flowers. The place

was bustling and it smelt wonderful… and for

those in need of a morning caffeine fix, there was a

great on-site café serving breakfast as well as coffee

and cakes.

The Flower Market has been designed to

keep cut flowers in optimum condition for sale

throughout Australia and for export. There are

around 60 wholesalers and

growers with a total of 140

stands selling fresh flowers to

more than 700 florists and

related businesses.

The Market Authority is

keen to increase the number of

plant wholesalers operating at

the site, as there is a demand

for potted plants from florists,

greengrocers and associated

businesses that buy regularly

there. I’d recommend a tour to find out more!
